Message from Each Association

Asia Package Design Conference (APD) is an international conference co-organized by package design organizations from five regions in Asia, namely Japan, South Korea, Shanghai, Taiwan and Thailand (guest). Themed “Think Design Future”, APD Nara 2021 this year will be held fully online, broadcasted live from Nara, Japan.

Last year, the whole world was affected by the coronavirus pandemic, as we welcome a “new normal”, in which we will experience drastic changes in our daily lives, society, economic activities and styles of working. How will this historic shift in our era affect the role of design? And what will the future of design be? At APD Nara 2021, we look forward to discussing these questions with our friends from Asia.

For our keynote speech, we will be welcoming Taku Sato, a world-renowned graphic designer and Mali-born Oussouby Sacko, the dean of Kyoto Seika University, to address us from different perspectives. Thereafter, we will be having area reports from representatives of the respective countries, giving us the precious opportunity to learn about the current situations of the rapidly developing regions in Asia.

At this year’s APD, we will be having two new activities. The first is the establishment of the “Asia Best Package Design Awards”, and secondly, we will be having a APD Joint Statement, in which we will declare our common goal for Asia’s package design. Both activities are a new challenge for us to spread the influence of Asia’s design to the world, for a better future.

Through APD, we have cultivated a deep friendship across the participating regions through the common theme of “package design”. We look forward to strengthening our ties and moving forward with everyone for the development of Asia’s package design.

아시아 4개국 패키지디자인 단체가 1993년 서울대회를 시작으로 28여년 세월이 지나오면서 만남의 장을 통해 상호 교류하면서 소통해 왔으나 지난해 글로벌 팬데믹으로 대변되는 COVID19에 의하여 정상적인 개최에 어려움이 생겼습니다.
이는 인류에 대한 거대한 위기이자 재앙으로, 21세기의 삶의 형식과 산업구조를 변화시키고 우리는 이러한 중차대한 격랑의 중심에 있습니다.
한번도 겪어보지 못한 세상을 경험하고 있는 것입니다. 현재 세계는 이러한 위기를 물리치기 위하여 다양한 해결책을 모색하고 있습니다.
그 가운데 디자인을 통한 삶의 형식과 방법의 변화와 다양한 해결책을 위한 엄청난 노력 또한 요구받고 있습니다.
따라서 친환경, 지속가능 디자인에 대한 가치와 포지셔닝을 중심으로 디자인의 가치 변화 흐름 속에서 이러한 가치가 디자이너와 소비자에게 미치는 영향을 파악 할 수 있도록 환경 친화 소비 지향점으로 하여 디자인 각 영역의 경계를 넘어 융합적 디자인 방법과 개발이 이루어져야 합니다.

이번 행사에 참여하시는 APD회원들과 관계자들이 국제교류를 통해서 새로운 영감을 얻고 각자의 작품세계와 디자인계의 발전을 위해 큰 성과를 이루게 되시기를 기대합니다.
APD모든 회원 여러분 건강 그리고 미래에 성공과 행복을 가져다주기를 기원합니다.

Congratulations on the hosting of the “APD NARA 2021.”
Package design organizations in four Asian countries have been exchanging and communicating for about 28 years, starting with the first event held in Seoul in 1993, but we faced an obstacle hosting our event because of the global COVID-19 pandemic that occurred last year.
COVID-19 is a tremendous crisis and disaster for humankind, which has completely overturned the lifestyle and industrial structure in the 21st century. We are standing in the middle of such a critical moment in history.
We are experiencing an unprecedented world, and the world is seeking various solutions to overcome the crisis at stake.
We are asked to make extraordinary efforts to change people’s lifestyles and methods through design.
Accordingly, we must pursue environment-friendly consumption by focusing on the values and positioning of sustainable design so we can understand the impact of such values on designers and consumers. Convergent design methods should be developed by crossing the boundaries among various domains of design.

I look forward to seeing all members of the APD and relevant authorities who have come to this event get new inspirations through international experience and make greater achievements in the worlds of art and design.

Lastly, I want to add a word of gratitude, on behalf of KPDA, to the staff members of JPDA for their hard work preparing for the “APD NARA 2021” and the members and presidents of other associations.

亚洲包装设计奖（APD）创立的近30年时间，正是世界、亚洲、中国发生巨大变化的时代，APD促进了亚洲各国包装设计的交流和发展，引领各国的包装设计走向世界，使得具有悠久历史的亚洲生活文化在新技术的时代焕发出时代的光芒。特别在新冠疫情在全球蔓延，冲击亚洲各国经济、生活的情况下，举办APD的意义，已经超越了包装产业、设计机构和设计师之间交流的需要，而成为推动亚洲经济的复苏、促进贸易回升、增强社会可持续发展的重要动力。
今天，包装设计已经成为中国产品开拓国内外市场的重要手段，注重可持续性、强调绿色生态设计已成为全球包装设计的首要价值标准。上海的包装设计一直在与亚洲、世界同行的交流和融合中发展，随着中国日益深刻地融入世界，上海的包装设计师既要保持“海派的设计话语”特色，也要运用“全球的设计话语”，面向未来去思考问题、去发现问题、去解决问题。因此，亚洲各国设计师的交流是十分必要的。在日本包装设计协会（JPDA）成立60周年之际，相信在奈良召开的亚洲包装设计大会，既是设计师运用智慧共同应对世界难题的契机，也是携手走向未来的新开端！

The Asia Package Design Conference(APD) has been in existence for nearly 30 years, which sees an era of tremendous changes in the world, Asia, and China. APD promotes the exchange and development of packaging design in Asian countries, leads the packaging design of various countries to the world, and contribute to the glitter of Asian lifestyle and culture with long histories in the new era of technology. Under the circumstance of the global spread Covid-19, which impacts on the economies and living conditions of Asian countries, the significance of holding APD has surpassed the need for exchanges between the packaging industries, design agencies and designers, and has become an important driving force for the recovery of economy, the promotion of trade and the strengthening of the sustainable development of society in Asia.
Nowadays, packaging design has become an important method for Chinese products to explore domestic and overseas markets. Emphasizing on the sustainability and the Green and Eco-friendly design has become the primary standards of value of the global packaging design. Shanghai’s packaging design industry has been developing in the exchange and integration with its counterparts in Asia and the world. As China increasingly integrates into the world, Shanghai’s packaging designers shall not only maintain the features of“Shanghai culture”, but also use“global design elements”to think about, discover, and solve problems facing the future. Therefore, it is quite necessary to have the communication with designers from Asian countries. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan Package Design Association (JPDA), I believe that the Asian Package Design Conference held in Nara is not only an opportunity for designers to use their wisdom to cope with the world’s problems, but also a new beginning for the future togetherness!

嗨，各位亞洲設計展的會員國家的朋友，大家好久不見，希望大家一切平安。非常榮幸能代表台灣包裝設計協會參與此次的盛會。

這兩年，在疫情陰影壟罩下，世界深受影響，改變大家的生活型態、處事態度與價值，但似乎也因此讓這不斷追求創新與改變的世界慢了下來，或許這是個契機，能讓我們靜下心來思考，自我與這片土地的關係，進而反思是否真的需要不斷追求極致的創新與進步？這樣思考影響了包裝設計的趨勢。

首先，面對物質過剩、過度消費的世界，永續循環、環境議題受到消費者與設計師的重視，再生材質、循環資源、包材減量成為許多設計師共同目標。

其次，在疫情影響下，讓人們更著重在地文化了，也成為近年包裝設計所著重的元素之一，設計師透過創意將地方的故事性、傳統文化表現在包裝，增加設計文化的深度與在地特色。

如此，包裝不僅是品牌行銷的工具，更成為理念與價值的宣導，透過包裝設計的表現讓人們關注於自身生長的土地環境。 2021年是日本包裝設計協會成立60年，在此獻上祝賀，透過會議的舉辦讓我們相互砥礪陪伴，期盼能為這世界設計更美好的未來。

Hello, friends from the Asia Package Design Association. It has been a while since last time we saw each other. My best wishes to all of you and wish you safety in these difficult times. On behalf of the Taiwan Package Design Association, it is my great honor to participate in this meeting.

In these recent two years, the world has been shifted and affected by the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has had great impact on our lifestyle, our attitudes, our values and the way we deal with matters. In particular, it seems to have slowed down our pace of persistently pursuing creation and change. Perhaps this can be an opportunity for us to calm down and think about the relationship between the physical and social environments we share. Furthermore, it also enforces us to rethink if the pursuit of unlimited progress, creation and production is truly sustainable. This consideration of sustainability has clearly influenced the trend of package design.

First, facing issues of material surplus and overconsumption, sustainable circularity-or circular economy, and climate change topics need to be regarded by designers. Using reprocessed materials, closed-loop production, and minimization of packaging have become many designers’ mutual goals.

Secondly, under the influence of COVID-19 pandemic, people have valued local culture more respectfully. Designers increase the depth of cultural design and local characteristics through stories and traditions.

Thus, package design is not only a tool of brand marketing, but also promotion of ideas and values. The presentation of package designs inspires people to respect the land and environment in which we live and grow up.

The year of 2021 is the 60th year since the Japan Package Design Association—the JDPA—was established. My congratulations to you. May we continue to encourage and accompany each other as we peruse and present the best design to the world.
